Ferdusi: Endeavour for world peace

Here is a rough translation of Ferdusi, a 10th century Iranian poet who toiled for thirty years in order to produce an Iranian epic called Shahnameh.  In this endeavour he combined legend with historical facts, hence, creating a timeless and spaceless masterpiece.  Some have compared him with Homer and his Odyssey, which, apart from storytelling and combining legend and history, I think is quite irrelevant as Ferdusi was also a philosopher of power who successfully combined patriotism and humanism.  Here is one example of such a combination in which, while expressing his love of Iran, he calls for a global revolution in order to bring about universal peace.  This calling had two reasons: his deep sense of humanism and the realization that peace only can become sustainable when it is combined with justice, friendship and love at a global level.

Wherever you are, roar
like a spring erupts in the world.

All of you show kindness to each other

to guard the entire world.
Endeavour for world peace.
With good fortune, seek the world’s splendour,
create a world like a paradise,
do not use obscene words against each other.
Cry this sentence into the ears of the wind -
If Iran is not to be, then I do not want to be.
