Maryam in Stanford, Omid in Evin, writing

Professor Mehran Mostafavi, who is head of the Physical Chemistry Lab of France, recently saw that an Iranian - Omid Kokabi - had authored an article he was reading. Excited to see an article from an Iranian, he looked at the address to see which university he was working in.  He was stunned to see that the address ended: 'Evin Prison, Unit 308'.  It turns out that Omid Kokabi had sent the results of his research on a laser system, which he had conducted while at a research centre in Spain, from prison. Mehran said that it sorely reminded him of one of Khomeini’s famous statements that ‘our prisons are universities.’

This is a matter of both pride and anger.  It is a matter of pride that a political prisoner tries to continue his scientific work, and a matter of ferocious anger that the country is ruled by a dictatorial regime which imprisons scientists and academics for their political beliefs.  God knows how many other Iranian scholars are in Evin and other prisons all over the country.

Reading this case made me think again of Maryam Mirzakhani. I asked myself what would have happened if she, like Omid, would have ended up in prison? This made me more eager to suggest that Maryam condition her return to Iran upon the release of all political prisoners.

Here is the abstract of Omid’s article:

A Gazan: "The international community is dead"

I recently contacted a Palestinian friend who I met while he was doing his PhD in London and who now works for the UN Human Rights Commission in Gaza, where he lives. I wanted to know how the savagery of the Israeli army has affected him and his family. Yesterday, after some weeks, he finally responded. It was shocking. Actually, it shouldn’t be shocking given how much we have seen of the indescribable suffering of the Palestinians on our television screens, and how much we have heard of the raging hypocrisy and silence of western governments when it comes to Palestine. Just compare their reaction to the brutalities of ISIS in northern Iraq, which led to both a military campaign and a huge humanitarian response. The reasons are also clear: there is oil in northern Iraq, and the armed force which is committing the atrocities is not the Israeli army. Yet on another level it is difficult to comprehend that such suffering is being inflicted on someone we know and love.

I wanted his response to be shared and have asked his permission to do so, which he gave on the condition of anonymity.

Dear Mahmood,

Many thanks for your message again. Things for me and my first degree relatives are ok. Yet, a close friend of mine lost three of his kids in unwarning shelling of his house. Luckily enough, he himself saved the attack (only injured), but lost his three kids. Another friend lost his cousin and brother in law as well. They Slaughered us...They Slaughetered us my friend. Things remain uncertain. No body knows who is the next...They just shell out houses without any warning....All happen out of sudden... You may be sleeping when the attack took place.... Alot of work here...what happened can no be put in words....Listening to people is a burden....being able to sleep is anohter burden...being able to eat is a thid one...I guess they confiscated the very essence of our life.....I do not think we are are human any more....Without exception, every one in Gaza has been affected by the Israeli offensive..The lesson I learned out of this experiences :"International Community is dead".
But before I leave you from this life my friend, I wish to stress couple of words: “they will never let us down…even if they kill all of us, destroy ALL OF our homes, and our infrastructure.. Our souls will keep fighting them…” The battle is not Hamas battle any more. The offensive is against us, as civilians. International community should understand that. So far, they killed some 1,976 Palestinians. Of these, 1,417 believed to be civilians, including 459 children, and over 239 women. Large number of civilians was killed in attacks on their homes, in the time when they were sleeping. Significant number of these attacks took place without any warning. In many cases, complete families, including parents, brothers, and sisters, were killed.

Maryam Mirzakhani condition your return to Iran on the freeing of political prisoners

The Iranian regime, which ideologically perceives and socially treats women as lesser than men, now tries to use Maryam Mirzakhani’s status as the first woman in history to win the Fields Medal for mathematics (a prize in the field of mathematics which is equal to, if not higher than, the Nobel prize) to drum up its own legitimacy by inviting her to Iran.

I don’t know where Dr. Mirzakhani’s political tendencies lie or whether she has any (though it is easier to find snow in the Sahara than an Iranian who has no political view). But if she is considering going to Iran, I would suggest that she condition her return on the liberation of Iran’s political prisoners – unlike Ms. Shirin Ebadi, who encourages her to go back and give recognition to a regime whose entire existence is based on the violation of the human rights of Iranians. I have no doubt she knows that a good number of Iran’s political prisoners come from her alma mater, Sharif University; she might even know some of them. The reward has provided her with a great opportunity to advocate for women rights and human rights in general in Iran.

Banisdar on Dawkins, rape, paedophilia, and not choosing between ‘bad’ and ‘worse’

Recently, in order to explain how syllogistic logic works, Richard Dawkins used two examples which need to be critically analysed.

A. "Date rape is bad. Stranger rape at knifepoint is worse. If you think that's an endorsement of date rape, go away and learn how to think."
B. "Mild paedophilia is bad. Violent paedophilia is worse. If you think that's an endorsement of mild paedophilia, go away and learn how to think."[i]

There are contradictions in his statements which need to be analysed.  In his teachings, if he did not mean to argue that the circuit of life is a closed circuit between bad and worse and only wanted to teach about syllogistic logic, or as he said, to teach relativism, then he encounters major contradictions.

First, calling date rape “bad” and rape by a stranger “worse” is a subjective judgement.  It happens that date rape might be worse because it can also be a betrayal of trust.  He [Dawkins] might respond that in this case date rape becomes “worse” than rape by a stranger, but he would be ignoring the [more general] fact that a mind which creates hierarchies of badness is the mind of an absolutist and determinist.

Second, the closed circuit of bad and worse also inclines in one direction from bad to worse.  As someone who teaches syllogistic logic, he knows that such a deduction is used to make the acceptance of a conclusion inevitable.  This is why such a closed circuit is part of syllogistic logic.

Third, [both the] “bad” and “worse” of badness are negations of right.  To rank such things does nothing but justify the bad and make it “acceptable”.  He accepts mild paedophilia as bad, and from the view of someone else it is worse.  If he had read [the Persian poet] Hafiz, he would not have thrown himself into the trap of syllogistic logic:

Judging the poor and rich "less" or "more" is evil.
It is an absolute to avoid such indiscretion.

In order to remove this contradiction, we need to realize that [both] “bad” and “worse” are anti-right. This is why they create a closed circuit. Dawkins, who is introducing syllogistic logic, should not neglect that he has also created such a closed circuit.  His response to critiques was: “What I have learned today is that there are people on Twitter who think in absolutist terms, to an extent I wouldn’t have believed possible.” It shows that he does not realize that it is he who thinks in absolutist terms.  This is because when one traps himself [or herself] in a closed circuit of choosing between “bad” and “worse” there is no choice -- only one way from “bad” to “worse” and from there to “worst”.  In other words, to relativize badness is [a] damaging form of submission to the absoluteness of badness, and a result of becoming prisoner within a closed circuit of “bad” and “worse”.

However, if we consider that he knows a result of syllogistic logic is that one has to submit to a “bad” [option] in order to escape a “worse” [one], then the analogy he develops reveals that he is a determinist.  We can see this in the sentences which follow his analogies: “If you think that's an endorsement of date rape/mild paedophilia, go away and learn how to think". Obviously, these sentences are written to ward off any accusations that he approves of date rape or mild paedophilia.  For the sake of argument, if we accept that he does not think that date rape or mild paedophilia are good, we can ask whether, by developing these scenarios, he does not want to say that if one is forced to “choose” between “bad” and “worse”, there is no option but to “choose” the “worse”. If he did not have this intention, why did he create the circuit? Does the theoretician of the “Selfish Gene” not want to say that the survival of the fittest is a closed circuit of ‘bad’ and ‘worse’ and that these two analogies reflect his theory? Or when he says, “go away and learn how to think”, does he not want to say that the choices people make and even see as good are nothing but a fated outcome of choosing between ‘bad’ and ‘worse’?
If the answers to these questions are affirmative, then his two analogies suffer from three further contradictions.

First, it is also possible to commit neither rape nor paedophilia.  Therefore, there is not a closed circuit in reality.  However, as Dawkins is a fatalist, he neglects this possibility of independence and freedom, or the relation of “right” with “right”, and sees only the relation of “power” with “power”. He therefore creates closed circuits between mild paedophilia and violent paedophilia, and date rape and violent rape.  Despite saying: “go away and learn how to think", he can’t see the relation of “right” with “right” and he makes [a relation of] “either this or that”. To acknowledge that the relation between “right” and “right” is natural and innate would destroy the foundation of his theory.

Second, the crux of these two analogies is that within them any sexual relation is regarded as a power relation.  This is based on the negation of human beings as right-oriented.  The fact is that not all sexual relationships are power relations, when they are spontaneous and there is no force involved.  To acknowledge spontaneous relationships between people is to acknowledge the open horizon of human intellects, which in turn is to acknowledge the connection between humans and God.  In other words, Richard Dawkins would need to acknowledge that by denying God it is he who has been captivated in delusion.

Third, if we assume that Dawkins’ two examples are closed circuits of bad and worse, even though the “bad” is not “good” there is no option other than to act upon it.  These analogies tell us that the reason for making a “bad” choice is that we want to avoid a “worse” one.  If he wants to convey this meaning to his readers, he does not know that in a closed circuit there is no such a thing as choice and that by choosing [(or rather submitting to)] a “bad” [option], then “worse” and “worst” [ones] also are chosen.  He and all the people who create closed circuits of bad and worse, or who trap themselves in them, ignore the fact that what makes a person commit paedophilic acts or rape is the authentication of power and act through it. It is this characteristic which makes a person violate rights, and as soon as someone submits to the fatalism of power they constrain themselves to a one-way path that moves only from “bad” to “worse” and from there to “worst”.

The fundamental question which our biologist needs to answer is this: If the circuit of the life of living beings was a closed circuit of bad and worse, would they have become living beings at all?

When we eliminate the contradictions, then spontaneous relations ([those of] independence and freedom) become relations in open circuits, and such circuits and relations make life possible.

Shame on the hypocrisy of western governments

Shame on all the hypocritical western governments which, with their silence, are collaborating with the criminal state of Israel in massacring the most defenseless people who are trapped in the biggest open prison in the world.  Shame on every single one of you  who give lectures about human rights but turn a blind eye to and support the racist apartheid state of Israel, which systematically violates these rights.  Here the lion's share of the blame belongs to the American government, since was it not for its gigantic military, economic and political support, this little racist state of Israel would not even dare to dream of such killings.

Banisadr: Israel is a phenomenon which sees its survival and existence through the disintegration of the Middle East

In a recent interview with Radio Asre-Jadid, Abolhassan Banisadr spoke about the crimes which are being committed by the Israeli army in Gaza, the reasons beyond them and the indifferent reaction of some Iranians to the situation. Below are some extracts which I have translated from the interview, however, the entire interview is worth listening to.

I would also like to mention that in another interview last week, he advocated a one-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. This has also been suggested in the past by others including Edward Said, Judith Butler and Yasser Arafat.

So, that being said, here are some quotations from Banisadr’s Friday interview:

“Khamenei and Netanyahu have the same way of thinking.  Mr (Khamenei) believes in (a doctrine of) victory through terrorisation, and thinks that if the West Bank also becomes armed, the work is done. Mr (Netanyahu), who is committing these crimes in Gaza, is in favour of creating fear and terror (as one of his generals had stated), so these people the Palestinians) do not dare to do anything and so they accept the situation of being sub-human and of slow death.  Therefore, they have similar ways of thinking. What Khamenei really means is that he wants the West Bank to come under the control of Hamas and Islamic Jihad.  However...these groups in Gaza do not observe the human rights of Palestinians. If you have accepted the logic of armed violence, then you inevitably will accept that the people with the stronger military will prevail, and therefore that the Palestinians should remain under the domination of Israel.  We can’t expect a power oriented mind to understand such realities.”

“The problem is that in Islamic countries the understanding of religion has become alienated and as a result people give a Godly role to power and force. ... They have created a destiny for themselves. The adventures of the crusades (in medieval times) are being repeated with one major difference. During the crusades, the west brought armies to the region and was defeated. Today, Muslims make their own money from selling oil to the west for next-to-nothing prices and then use this money they buy weapons from the west to killing each other in its favour, hence bringing their countries to the verge of disintegration.”

“Israel is a phenomenon which sees its survival and existence through the disintegration of the Middle East (region). When I was in Iran (until June 1981, when he was overthrown by a coup), I became aware of the Israeli plan for the disintegration of the countries of the region (the Middle East). This plan was being developed in the U.S. Department of Defence.  This plan is being implemented wherever the U.S. has intervened since.  You can see this in Libya, in Syria and in Iraq.  Iran is also part of such a plan, and if Israel has an opportunity to become dominant, it will come after me and you (meaning the Iranians). Is it not being said that Israel is building bases in the Iraqi, Syrian and Iranian areas of Kurdistan. We need to follow a policy which is based on the principle of ‘negative equilibrium,’ a policy which makes it possible for all countries in the region to live independently and freely and to cooperate and coexist with what they share in common.”
“Part of the problem of Palestine, from my point of view, is internal. The Palestinians could well use the opportunity they had gained in order to establish a society based on rights. If they had done this, then Israel could neither inflict such suffering on them nor rain bombs on them all the time.”

“Here we are all facing a bitter reality, which is that as Israel was committing crimes in Gaza this week, in Syria 1700 people were also killed. (In such a situation) Mr Netanyahu can say: ‘so, I can kill more.’”

“The reason some people (referring to some Iranians) say that Gaza has nothing to do with me them is because they can’t think that people are right-oriented, and so that nations have a right to live and to have national rights.  The reason a person can’t think in such a way is because, as an Iranian, s/he does not see herself as one who has such rights. If s/he thought in such a way and saw himself as a human being with rights, then, he could not say that is was none of his business because s/he knew that the violation of rights anywhere in the world is like a violation of her or his rights in Iran.”

“...Who is stealing Iranian oil? Saudi Arabia, which is allied with Israel, and Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, who are allies of Israel.  So (what is happening in Gaza, from this point of view) is also our business. ...Who was involved in the October Surprise and Iran-Gate? Israel.  Who helped the (Iranian) regime to continue a war with Iraq for eight years? Israel. So it is our business.”

“How does the propaganda of the dominant power confuse people like you so that you can’t see the truth? ...We are surrounded by the military and intelligence bases of the U.S. and Israel, so it is our business.”

We should become architects/creators of our destinies and terminate the life of despotism.   We ourselves should become right-oriented people.  We ourselves should become proud and noble nations, and become nations which organize our lives based on national rights...not letting anyone to violate even an iota of these rights.
