Too tired to write a comment about this one. The thing is
power, to a large extent, tends to control society through controlling their
sexuality. This is why Vatican does its best to control people's sex life, the Iranian regime tries to
control society through sexualising everything....hmmm, very similar to
capitalism.
Foucault
in his history of sexuality talks about Victorian Britain when in order to
remove sexuality from public domain and sweep it under the carpet, they began
to cover anything which even would implicitly seem sexual but ended up
sexualising everything and anything. This is exactly what the ruling
clergy did to Iranian culture. Why they did it? Was it because they were
really concerned about people's ethics and modesty? One look at the private
life of most of these people can remind us of Hafez famous poem:
واعظان کین جلوه در محراب و منبر می کنند. چون به خلوت می روند آن
کار دیگر می کنند
Which
means that the clergy advise people not to do certain things but in private
they commit them themselves.
So
why they did it? For example why they forced women to cover their hair as
the sign of modesty? I remember at the time, Banisadr, the president
constantly talked against use of force in order to make people to behave in a
"modest" way. Once in a massive public gathering he talked
against use of force and then asked a rhetoric question from the people:
"Is it not the wish of us(moslems) that we all go to paradise? But I tell
you that if you want to take me there by force I prefer to go to
hell." Then he argued that anytime in order to achieve certain goals
we resort to force, we will achieve the opposite result.
So,
once again, why the ruling clergy despite of constant warnings against
imposition of hejab (in order to do the Victorian thing and remove sexuality-
in their mind of course- from the public, they still violently tried to impose
hejab? The straight answer is that as they knew that they don't have the
majority support so they needed to control the society through exercise of
power and to show them who the boss is. In order to use such power
against the public they needed to have an excuse and the imposition of hejab
provided them with such excuse( While during the time of Mohammad, most men and
women were semi-naked and had no concept of covering hair/breast, as the sign
of modesty. Even at the time of pilgrimage)
This
is why anytime they feel insecure about their position and the explosion of
discontent; they start the massive campaign against women who have
"bad" hejab. They are conducting one now!
