ٌWhat is Noruz? (The Iranian New Year.)

In the last few thousand years (4396, to be precise) Iranians have celebrated their New Year on the first day of spring. Actually, because they didn't have computer systems or electronic telescopes for most of this time to calculate the exact date, New Year gradually moved away from the first day of the spring, but thanks to Omar Khayam, who was not just a poet but also a superb mathematician and astronomer, around 900 years ago some calculations brought it back to its rightful place.

Anyway, in order to explain the philosophy behind Noruz, a good friend of mine wrote this piece.  I hope those who would like to know what Nouruz stands for will find it useful.

Happy Noruz to everyone

Noruz, which means ‘New Day’, is neither a celebration of great historical figures nor a celebration of historical victories. It is simply a celebration of the life of a human being who lives when she/he lives in independence and freedom. Noruz is the celebration of liberation from power relations. It is a celebration of liberation from alienation. Noruz is a celebration of becoming aware of one’s talents and becoming one with them. We can only interact with them when we actualize them, and such a day is Noruz. Noruz is the celebration of self-recreation, of the determination to create a life based on principles of friendship, sincerity and decency. Noruz is any day when we creatively interact with our history to create our present and future identity. The task of an artist is to create such a day and her/his art is to live such a day. We hold our hands with care and love and hope this celebration becomes a celebration of friendship, oneness and solidarity. You all are welcomed to celebrate the culture and art of Noruz. May all your days be Noruz, and may you always be victorious in turning all your days into Noruz.
